Gem Animation: “Marooned On Watango Island” [UPDATED]

EDIT: see end of the post for words by Lluis himself!

This is an amazing animation by Lluis Fuzzhound, who apparently is self-taught!

Inspired by and paying homage to the style and animation of the 50′s (“Cartoon Modern”), it was inspired by a friend of Lluis who is a tiki carver, and made for an actual Tiki exhibition.

It seems straight out of that decade! Check it out:

UPDATE: There was so much interest in this short and how it was made that we reached out to Lluis to find out. Here’s what wrote:

The software I used is nothing out of the ordinary:
The programs I use for each of the elements in the cartoon are…

Animation: Pencil and Flash
Background: Illustrator & Photoshop
Sound: Soundbooth & Soundtrack pro
and I put it all together in After Effects.

I basically work in a traditional animation process.

1. storyboard
2. time music/layout backgrounds
3. animate
4. ink
5. put together

The music is from my own private collection. I like mid century music.
I am also a drummer and musician, I think this helps with timing the animation.

Thanks Lluis for the quick reply and explanation!

Not only was this so period authentic in look and execution, but the use of music is spot on.u00a0 I’d be interested in knowing more about the software used on this.

Beautiful design, and consistent across the whole cartoon. Very nicely done.nYour timing could be tweaked some, especially in terms of set-up time from gag to gag. Your timing seems somewhat flat, and that lack of accents –thinking of your pacing and gag structure like a graph coming out of an EEG machine, for example– means that where there are smiles at your successful working in a very distinct style, there COULD be the same thing along with more than a couple belly-laffs, which are decidedly lacking.nYour ANIMATION itself, is funny. It’s not damning by faint praise to say you can really move your stuff funny. I thought of Jim Tyer in places, and that is meant as high praise indeed.nKeep up the good work.
