Today we have another interview with a member of the Wooshii community that has won several projects and made some cool videos: Paul Maina (aka FOCii).
Let’s get it started right away:
How did you get started with creative things? What has been your path right up to this moment?
I am now 35…i was first a sculptor at 13-14 years, then a painter, then morphed to graphic design, then morphed to Motion Graphics…
so ever growing ever evolving.
How does it feel to be a creative working on online video nowadays? Pros and cons?
ADVANTAGES
1. To at least some degree, we self employed can set our own hours on these projects.
2. There’s often more freedom in taking vacation time or sick time, as long as arrangements are made, and we meet deadlines.
3. We self employed can often avoid getting stuck in rush hour traffic, by either working at the studio, or adapting our commute time to a different schedule.
4. There are so many clients turning to contracting online, that we are now at the right place and right time
DISADVANTAGES
When you’re self-employed, you must be willing to make sacrifices for the sake of the job. Sometimes we are going to work long hours on these projects to meet deadlines, which means that we won’t have as much time as we used to for family or leisure activities. And if the cash flow becomes a trickle, we’re going to be the last ones to get paid.
You’ve won a few projects at Wooshii. What are some good tips for winning pitches?
To win a pitch:
Did you know that when you meet someone for the first time, they immediately make a judgment call. They judge you by the way you dress, the way you greet them, the way you stand, the way you shake their hand, the way you do your hair, and more. The list is endless.
So it’s important to make a killer DEMO REEL for first impression when you are pitching to potential clients.
What is the favourite video (Wooshii or not) you’ve made so far?
WE LOVED CRYSTONE VIDEOS, THOSE ARE THE BEST WE HAVE DONE.
What is your favourite video on the whole web?
http://www.fusioncis.com/press/gwdt/GWDT_titles.mov
Favourite software (or hardware) to work with?
I love 3D MAX and After Effects.
And which software or hardware (or both) doesn’t exist, but you wish it would?
I wish we had a software that makes 3d lip syncing easy.
What are you working on right now?
We are doing a 1 hour movie’s graphics..pretty cool stuff
Finally, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
5 years=3 studios and 100 employees strong
